Poetry Thursday

Alabama Kitty

The Dichotomy of Morning

It's 5 AM and the early dawn,
like a camera obscura,
shows on the kitchen wall
what's going on outside: nothing.
And the alarm you set for 4:55
still pulses in your head like a bad
song.  Nothing at this moment
has more value than your bed, and the warmth
that you left now rises from the sheets
like a prayer.  And to think that an hour ago
the world meant nothing except that you
were in it, sleeping, engulfed
with covers.  And though birds were starting
their pre-dawn songs in the rhododendron
outside your window, you didn't hear
it.  How great it all felt.
