Well, I must say this giveaway has been full of good times. The "favorite birthday" stories were so much fun to read (you should check them out for sure). Thank you to everyone who added to the July birthday festivities. I wish I could send you all a big package of LOVE.
Instead, I'm sending out super big HUGS.
July (the birthday month) starts tomorrow.
I'm overflowing with secrets.
Dan brought home a surprise for me today. The Portable Dorothy Parker. Marjorie, I know this will make you happy. I can't wait to get into it.

The Mailman brought Tom Holmes's new chapbook. EXCITING. Dan and Tom were classmates at Eastern Washington University and they also worked at Eastern Washington University Press together.

Dan did a blurb for his book. I'm the proud wifey so I thought you would all like to see his blurb.

Baby Bono, you and me...

I'll bring the cup o' soups (our favorite movie food) if you cuddle with me.

Tomorrow I'm cleaning this house.
Wish me LUCK.
Remember, The Reciprocity Giveaway, I'm crossing my fingers for each and every one of you.
Thank Goodness
I just wanted to tell you all that my two Young Women Rock. I don't have kids but I have Ashleigh and Hannah. They probably think I'm the biggest dork but hey, I'm okay with that. We went to the water park/theme park Alabama Adventure during Youth Conference. I love roller coasters so I really had a lot of fun. This place had NO lines so we went on the rides over and over. So much fun. The girls looked back at me after riding the roller coaster (I got to sit in the back row by myself and giggle and scream) and they laughed at me. Whatever.

My favorite part of the adventure was when another chaperone told me I couldn't be outside during the dance and I was like, "um, I'm thirty two years old, thank you." (In my head) What I really said was, "I'm a chaperone" and the lady appologized. Really, I was flattered because I felt like an old lady all weekend. You know one of those old ladies who is trying to be young and hip, that's how I felt.
Well, I'm just like my Mommy because you don't mess with her kids and I'm finding that I'll probably be the same way with my kids someday. If anyone hurt my girl's feelings during this weekend, the Kat gloves would have come off. Well, in a nice way...maybe.
I also learned that I am a snob this weekend. There is something about being raised in California (at least for me) that has left me with a edgy look and a wall around me. I think I'm a really nice girl but I also think I'm a bit intimidating. I mean, I think that I am hard to approach. The problem is, I'm also shy and I don't really like going up to people in general. The combination is UGLY. I don't really know how to change it. I know I'm sassy and I know I'm quiet in groups. I'm just like Baby Bono really.

To me Bono is the sweetest, most perfect person (okay, puppy) ever.
P.S. The RECIPROCITY GIVEAWAY will be over Monday night at midnight'ish. I have had so so so much fun reading about your favorite birthday memories.
Shout out to Melissa and Roger, Thank you for dinner. We had so much fun. Rizzo and Bug are super cute. We loved spending time with you guys.

I'm back in one piece. BARELY. Oh, I got more goodies for the RECIPROCITY GIVEAWAY. Ladies, get on the list, I promise I make cool care packages.

-THE MONTH OF BIRTHDAYS-Let's celebrate!
I've been very blessed with amazing friends and family that have always made my birthday wonderful. I wanted to pass some of that around. Well, the fun news is that PENELOPE is coming out on DVD the week of my birthday. Penelope is a cute movie that I really liked. Well, I'm going out of town for the weekend (Youth Conference in Alabama), so this should give you plenty of time to get in on the celebration. Let's tell stories about our favorite birthdays. That sounds fun. The winner will get a box full of love (fun things from Kat and the movie Penelope) when the movie comes out on the 15th of July. Share your stories and pass the love around. Oh, and Happy Birthday to the July Girls. Cancers ROCK.

P.S. I'll put your names in a hat (sometime next week) and Dan can pick the winner.

I want to go to Italy some day. I think most of us do. I get on kicks where I only want to watch Italian films. You should watch Malena, A Room with a View (set in Italy), Life is Beautiful, Il Postino, and Roman Holiday. Oh, and Only You is a fun one. My favorite one is Cinema Paradiso. I love this movie.

My point is, Olive Garden is having a contest where you can win a trip for two to Italy . I figure someone has to win so let it be one of us. I'm a dreamer but hey, you never know.

Now if you'll let me boss you around a bit and organize your next movie night, I have a few suggestions. I think you should rent one of these movies, try your luck at winning a trip to Italy and make some of Dan's pasta (we found this recipe in Dominoe Magazine). Dan makes some dang good pasta.

Cook a pound of fettuccine, and while that's going on simmer two cups of heavy cream in a big skillet. When cream is reduced by about a third, throw in the zest of two lemons, and a couple tablespoons of chopped fresh rosemary leaves. Cook a few more minutes, then transfer drained pasta to the skillet and toss with the sauce. Add salt, lots of fresh ground pepper and plenty of parmesan cheese, and serve.

This pasta is our fancy pants meal for when we invite friends over. He doesn't make it for just little ol' me. SAD.

-This is our first photograph together-
Sometimes, I catch myself in a moment, one of those moments where I ask myself how did I turn into a married woman living in Mississippi. Then I think back to what it was like when Dan was courting me. He lived in Seattle and I lived in Southern California. It was hard to be so far away from him. This video by The Weepies reminded me of that time. Sometimes I miss my single girl life but I wouldn't go back. I love having my Hot Dog right here with me, even if we are in Mississippi.

I'm itching to see the movie Priceless. One of my complaints about living in Mississippi is that the movies I really want to see don't come here. I'm so envious of Cindy because she got to go see it. She's a lucky girl! Well, I put it on my Netflix. I think I've already mentioned that we have banned local video stores here, they don't get a lot of the movies we want either (and they're a rip off). The things you start missing about home are usually the things you took for granted. Silly how that works out.

But, I'm hooked on Designstar Season 3. It airs Sunday nights on HGTV. I just wanted to let you know that you can watch the past episodes online and catch up. I've already picked some favorite ladies and my least favorite freakshow. There is a crazy lady. Woo Hoo, bring on the drama.
Please, let me age gracefully.
I'm about to turn 33 and I'm going to Alabama to chaperone Youth Conference. How did this happen? How did I become old enough to be a chaperone? I just graduated from high school (in my head). What? It's only been like 15 years. I noticed that my white hairs are coming in in new spots on my head. What is that? So, I'm looking to ladies who I hope to look like someday: Miss Natalie Chanin and Emmylou Harris. Which works out perfectly because they are both from Alabama, so I can see where they are from this weekend. I hope Birmingham is super cool. I also hope I don't leave my weekend of chaperoning with anymore white hair. But then again, look how great these ladies look. Hmmm, let me age gracefully like them. They are beautiful.

Natalie Chanin Emmylou Harris

I've had the flu. No fun for me. This kitty cheers me up though. My cure for the flu is Popsicle's, sleep, and Katflix (my favorite movies). So Dan watched How to Make an American Quilt with me. I feel so much better. WOO HOO.
Do any of you have a favorite movie for sick days?

Friday, June 20, 2008

Topsy Turvey did a post about roulotte's or gypsy carts. I want one and I want it bad. I imagine myself hiding out in one, in our future backyard. How cool would that be? They kind of remind me of a circus train, or 10th Kingdom (a mini series I was fascinated with a few years ago). They also remind me of Harold and Maude (remember Maude lived in a caboose). When I go to France I hope to get a chance to stay in one. I'm dreaming here but man, these are so cool.

This is something that I end up saying to Dan a lot. I must say, my husband puts up with a lot of SASS around here. "Cut the sass" was what my Dad would say to me on a regular basis. Being a sensitive, sassy Cancer, I would always look at him with big, sad eyes and wonder why he was being so mean. Sometimes I don't even realize that I'm being sassy. I'm okay with it though. I kind of like that I'm a sassy girl. I remember loving my Sassy magazines just because they we're called Sassy. Do you remember those? I think most of my best girlfriends are sassy girls too. I LOVE THE SASS! Bring it on Sister Girls.

p.s. Check out Amy's blog. Funny stories about us in the 8th grade (embarassing photos included).

Pretty Hannah, my 15 year old buddy, came over today to chill. We went swimming and played in my closet. Hannah has a wedding to attend this summer and she needed a dress. I just happen to be a girl who loves clothes so she was in luck. She found the perfect dress (well, I think she looked perfect in it). But then I started thinking, hmmmm, I want a new dress or a few new dresses. These are some of my picks.

Miss Ashley, you can be my new best friend.

Miss Paris, you can live in my favorite room (my closet).

Natalie, I'll take you out on the town and show you off.

Ashley, Paris, and Natalie come live with me.

Let the Sun Shine In...

This is my summer to make my first quilt and I am so super excited about it. You have to check out Heather Bailey's new fabric collection for Free Spirit (look at the slide show she put together). I'm usually not into such bright colors but I love these.

I first found out about Heather when I was looking up Art/craft room/studios. I fell in love with hers. How could you not? Then I posted a photo of her cute hair when I was going back and forth about the bangs. I couldn't even remember where I found the photo of her at the time. I just thought her hair ROCKED. Then I found out the funniest story. My baby sister Buffy has a best friend named Jessilee. She's a funny girl who cracks me up. Anyhow, Buf called me to tell me that Jess saw the photo of Heather on my blog and that she knew her. I guess she went to the same church and Jessilee had nicknamed her Kat (I think because we both have super cute style, he he). I thought this was so random and silly. Jessilee if you read this, post something, I'm sure you could make the story sound more entertaining. Point is, I think it's fate that I use some of her new fabric on my first quilt.
Don't you think?

Mushroom Cake
The cake was a hit with the girls. We're still in the brainstorming phase of our summer planning. When I got home, I was looking at Miss Natalies blog at 100 Percent Cottam (thanks Amy). She had a post about the game M.A.S.H. I was so excited. I'm a slumber party, note passing kind of girl so this game means a lot to me. Anyhow, you can play it online. Woo Hoo, girls. HAVE FUN.

Lazy, Hazy, Crazy, Days of Summer.

Tonight our Young Women group is having a planning meeting. Which means we get to sit around and eat cake and figure out what fun things we want to do this summer. I've been thinking up things like roller skating, embroidery, making beanies, quilt making and SERVICE.
My sister Buffy loved Young Women's. She emailed this today, randomly.
"I have found that we learned everything we need to know for our lives in young women's. Sounds strange, but it's so true. Solution: Service! Seriously. Immerse yourself in it and it will change your life."
What a smart girl, that little Miss Buffy.

Here she is with some of her Young Women buddies (all grown up). I'm pretty fond of these women. I'm a lot older so I was their Camp Director for a few summers.
All of this Young Women talk made me think of my Young Women's days.

These are a few of my Young Women buddies (all grown up). My wish for the young ladies I work with is that they will form life long friendships with one another. I truly believe that the experiences and friendships I made in YW's are some of the most treasured and fulfilling of my life.
Do any of you have any fun, cheap ideas for our Wednesday night activities?
Do tell.

Dan bought me this globe pencil sharpener to go with my study kit. I'll be spending part of my days at the library studying for my CSET exams. I'm planning to be an expert on U.S. History, World History, Civics and Economics, California History and Geography by September 13th. Wish me lots of luck.

I got up at a decent time this morning to make some cupcakes and salad for lunch at Pretty Dyan's with the girls. It was fun. I turned on The Velvet Underground and baked the morning away. Well really I just put the cupcakes in and piddled around. I finished putting together my cute strawberry sweater. I made a green salad with nuts, avocados, mushrooms and strawberries in it. YUM.

Check out these super cute girls. We had so much fun chatting and eating yummy treats.

I left a little early for my hair appointment with Miss Susan. She is amazing. If you need a hairstylist in Hattiesburg, go to Susan. She'll do you right.

Here I am modeling my new sweater and the new cupcake toppers. I wish Dan would come home from school so he could take a decent photo of me.

Our buddies Neil and Suzanne went to see The Cure in Atlanta, Georgia (lucky kids) this weekend. We got to chill with the cutest pugs (Pugsly and Shadrach) ever.

I tend to have favorites, Pugsly being one of them. He is an old soul.

Dan likes to be in a PUG SANDWICH. I think they like it too.

Dad and Dad CJ.
We love you so much.
Dan and I watched I'm Not There last night. I love Bob Dylan (especially on road trips). I must say, Cate Blanchett is amazing.

Pretty Sarah, I hope you have a super birthday. Sorry, about this photo. Note to all, we were in camping clothes.

and after.
We put up our new anniversary print. Waffle the pug sure looks content. We also got some new sheets recently and I think they look really nice. We don't have a headboard yet so I'm thinking of getting this print by CindyMindyPindy on Etsy. I love it because it has the California poppy and the California quail on it. It also has the quails Latin name on it. Dan is big on memorizing the Latin names of animals, so I thought it was perfect. I'm hoping that she'll do one for Washington's bird and flower so we can put them both up in our bedroom. We have to represent our states, you know?
maybe a little too much.
Favorite Person (outside family)?
Well, Pretty Marjorie tagged me for this little survey. I was excited about it at first. Then I sat down and started thinking about what my answers would be and now I'm thinking this is a really hard question to answer. There are so many. I've decided to be completely honest and I've narrowed it down to two. Julie and Chris.
Favorite food?
strawberries and sushi
I still sleep with my baby blanket and my stuffed pug named Waffle.
How would the person who loves you most describe you in ten words or less?
"Kitty Muffin is the most beautiful, prettiest girl in the world." -DAN
Any regrets in life?
No, I've had a good time. I wouldn't change anything.
Favorite Bible verse right now?
"Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding."Proverbs 3:13
This verse is motivating me to get out my study guides and start preparing for my CSET exams.
I'll be honest, I had to look up one that would work for this survey.
Guilty pleasure?
Reality tv shows about finding love, the really bad ones. I'm not talking about The Bachelor, I'm talking about Tilla and Rock of Love. It's embarrassing. Oh, and The Hills, I love to watch a train wreck.
Got any confessions?
Just between the two of us, I'm not a fan of Mississippi.
I love cup-o-soups even though they are really bad for me.
If I could drink Diet Coke, I would and I would drink a lot of it.
I get jealous of people I see on TV who are doing something I want to do and I cry (because I'm a big baby).
If you had to spend 1,000 on yourself, how would you spend it?
I love this question. This is the perfect opportunity to put my birthday wish list out there.
-a sewing machine-Lolita Lempicka's new fragrance Forbidden Flower.-a green flower shopper bag that I can carry in my purse.-this super cute sweater.-Gene Kelly dvd's .-this little print of Ruby from Etsy.-Super Cute Clothes. And Fluevogs.
Oh, I could go on and on. But I'm pretty sure I'm way beyond my 1,000 dollar limit.
If I really did get 1,000 to spend, I'd put it in my Europe trip fund.
Least favorite thing about your house?
The tubs (they are both too small to take a bath in).
One thing you're bad at?
I don't like calling people on the phone. I feel like I'm intruding. I love when people call me though. I'm more of a thank you note kind of girl. If I can put it in writing and avoid making a phone call, I'm a happy girl.
One thing you're good at?
This is hard. I think one of my least attractive traits is that I'm not good at seeing what I'm good at. I want so badly to do everything perfect and I feel like I never get anything quite right. Probably because in my head I have this perfect little picture of how I want things to look or be. When they don't turn out like I imagine, I get sad. I do know that I'm good at laundry. I can't stand it when there are dirty clothes in my house. Future house guests beware: I'm a laundry elf. I will take your dirty clothes when you're not looking and wash and fold them.
If you could change something about your circumstance, what?
I would like to feel more happy about where I am in my life. I am so sick of hearing my inner voice tell me how much I dislike where I live or living on a students budget or not finding a job. I would change my attitude. There you have it. Mississippi isn't as bad as it is in my head some days. It's actually a pretty cool place.
Who would you like to meet someday?
Living: Bettie Page, Amy Sherman-Palladino (Marjorie I'm with you there), John Goodman, John Cusack.
Dead: Gene Kelly, Mary Leakey, Tamera de Lempicka, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marlon Brando, Joseph Cornell and Sam Francis.
What makes you feel sexy?
Black satin and Dan's cologne
Who is your real life hero?
My Mommy
When are you most relaxed?
When I'm chilling with Baby Bono.
What stresses you out?
Dan's schooling, debt, finishing my Masters, waiting to have kids (I'm getting old).
What can you not live without?
Do you agree or disagree with the recent article that reported that blogs are authored by narcissists?
I disagree. I think blogging is a good way to make friendships stronger. I feel like it gives me an outlet and way to share my world without having to bug anyone by making a phone call. Most of my friends are super busy Moms and I think blogging gives us a chance to keep in touch.
Favorite charity/cause?
My heart strings are pulled the most when the issues revolve around dogs, Parkinson's disease or child abuse.
Favorite Blog recently?
I don't really have one. I love checking in on my buddies and I look at there blogs way too often so I'd have to say my favorites are Kristen, Amy, Marjorie...anyone on my friend list.
Something you can't get enough of?
Worst job you've ever had?
Boys and Girls Club
What job would you pay not to have?
A meat packer. YUCK.
If you could be a fly on the wall, where?
I'd want to be in Montparnasse, Paris in the early 1920's. I would love to listen in on these characters: Picasso, Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemmingway, Soutine, Diego Rivera, Modigliani, Duchamp, Cocteau, and on and on.
I think that's it. I finished the survey. I'm passing it on to Amy and Kristen. I hope you guys have fun. I think I learned a little bit about myself and I hope you do to.
Thank you for being one of my favorite people. I feel like the luckiest girl to have you in my life. I hope you're birthday is super fun. Make lots of wishes. I'm ready to make your TRIP TO SCOTLAND plans any day. Just give me the word.
